Condo Sereno - Nosara, Costa Rica

Nosara

Awaken to the sounds of surf, howler monkeys and parrots. Watch the sun set across the Pacific. A few minutes walk to unspoiled and uncrowded beaches, world renowned surf breaks, protected from development by nearby  Ostinal Refuge where 100 000 turtles may lay their eggs in a single evening. The small rural village of Nosara has a friendly population of Costa Ricans, Americans, Canadians and Europeans supporting excellent restaurants, hotels and shops. When people talk about Nosara they usually mean Playa Guiones.  Nosara has become a generic term for the area and is in fact a small town 20 minutes drive away. A picturesque collection of restaurants and shops make up Playa Guiones. The main beach is wide and flat and the water is warm all year round. The crowds are minimal here, even at the busiest times of year. Apart from lazy hazy beach type activities you can also go on a jungle canopy tour, take a yoga class, charter a fishing boat, horse riding along the beach at sunset, hike to waterfalls, take private Spanish lessons, go exploring in the jungle  on an ATV and finish it all off with a massage at the Tica massage.

Getting There

We are located in Playa Guiones, Nosara which is about 4 kilometers before the village of Nosara. There are two international airports in Costa Rica:  SJO in San Jose, and LIR in Liberia.  Our guests commonly arrive at LIR and take a taxi  shuttle  2.5 hours to Playa Guiones.  There is also a small airport in Nosara, with two Nature Air flights daily coming and going between SJO and NOB.
Most of our guests fly into LIB, and take a taxi shuttle 2.5 hours from there to Playa Guiones. If you are renting a car it's important to have a map, and a GPS would be helpful as well.  For first time visitors, it can be difficult finding our place the first time.

Surfs Up

Most surfers visiting Nosara head straight for Playa Guiones, which has one of the most consistent waves in Cost Rica. Nosara catches both North and South swells, and there are are surfable waves here over 300 days a year. Although somewhat hard to get to, Guiones is no longer a "secret" spot, and can get crowded - particularly during the dry season. The break at Guiones is sometimes called a "beginner" or "longboard" wave, but don't let that description fool you. True, it is a sandy bottom beach break, and when the waves are small it can be the perfect spot to learn. But when bigger swells come in, waves here can be quite big and powerful. Guiones is mainly a beach break with several good left and right peaks. Breaks well with all swells and tides. Guiones is often mushy at high tide, and tends to be more hollow at lower tides. This is an incredibly consistent, often forgiving break that can get quite big. Olga's is a short right hand reef break directly in front of Olga's Bar/Restaurant in Pelada. Usually best at mid to high tide, with a decent size swell. It is certainly no secret that there is surf to be found on beaches to the north and south of Guiones. Still, these spots are best discovered on your own. If you are up for a drive, and willing to explore a little, you'll likely come across some great waves!
